Foreign rock lyrics. Rock ballads of all time

Rock ballads are a category of songs by rock groups that are distinguished by their slow sound. Among the groups that popularized rock ballads are Led Zeppelin and Scorpions. Each album of these groups always included at least one gorgeous ballad, which allowed them to expand their listening audience. Rolling Stone magazine could not ignore such a popular segment of world rock, so it decided to conduct a survey to determine best rock ballads. Voting, which took place during the week, presented so many options that instead of the usual top 10, it was decided to create a rating of the best ballads from 12 songs.

IN best rock ballads of all time U2's song With or Without You, recorded for the famous album The Joshua Tree, was also included.

Eleventh place went to the song of the legendary The Beatles - Hey, Jude, which is the longest composition of the group, lasting more than 7 minutes. Even though the song was recorded in the last years of the Beatles' work, such a length is uncharacteristic for that time and for The Beatles. Two more songs by the Fab Four were included in the rating.

The usual top ten ballads were opened by the American group Lynyrd Skynyrd, which became famous for two things - the song Sweet Home Alabama (but we are not talking about this song now) and a terrible plane crash that claimed the lives of three members of the group. This rating includes another song by the American group Free Bird, whose length surpasses even the above-mentioned “Hey, Jude”. Moreover, Lynyrd Skynyrd's song became the longest song in the " best rock ballads».

In front of the Americans were another representatives of the United States - the group Pearl Jam, which is considered a successful project that appeared during the formation of grunge and has maintained popularity to this day, and the group did not break up, and none of its members committed suicide. We are hinting at Kurt Cobain. The song "Black" was released on Pearl Jam's debut release and has become a favorite among rock fans over the years. Especially considering that this is a ballad that bears little resemblance to grunge in any of its manifestations.

Above was the work of one of two solo performers who are not related to rock. Marvin Gaye and his song Let's Get It On from the album of the same name over its forty-year history are really worth inclusion in the list of the best ballads, even rock ones! It is worth saying that this Marvin album became revolutionary in rhythm and blues, indecently popularizing the topic of sex .

Representatives of British progressive rock took seventh place. The composition Wish you were here is dedicated to the theme of Syd Barrett, who was the leader of the group at the dawn of its work. It was one of two songs from the rating that were performed at the Olympic Games in London in 2012 (the other was Hey, Jude performed by Sir Paul McCartney).

Slightly higher is Prince's ballad Purple Rain from his extremely successful album of the same name. Prince is the second artist on the list to also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as is Gaye, although both have more notable accomplishments in rhythm and blues or soul!

The best rock ballads in the world: TOP 5

The top five opens with the second song of The Beatles – Let it be, which also belongs to the late period of the band’s creativity.

Guns N'Roses and their November rain pour down from fourth place. This composition was supported by a wonderful video that increased the rotation of the hit on MTV. Its distinctive feature is the acceleration of the rhythm at the end, so characteristic of several other songs in the rating.

The top three were opened by the Rolling Stones, which is symbolic for the rating carried out by their almost complete namesakes. The song Wild Horses opened the British catwalk. Total in the list" the best rock ballads in the world"It turned out there were 6 British songs at once, against 5 American ones, and the Irish, of course. Where would we be without them!

Above is the third Beatles track, written by George Harrison - Something. This song became one of George's two masterpieces and certainly the main one in the great band from Liverpool!

A best rock ballad- this is a famous one that needs no introduction. Let's just say that the group that recorded it was repeatedly accused of plagiarizing the introduction to the stairs from the song Taurus by Spirit, released three years earlier. There are indeed similarities, but Page went further, coming up with a delightful sequel, which Plant supplemented with excellent poetry. By the way, Jimmy only allows Robert to sing this song at concerts.

What is a rock ballad anyway? A soulful song with a cool solo and unreal meaning? Partly yes, but it can be fast and slow, quiet and loud, guitar or electronic. The main thing that should be present in it is the special spirit of ballad rock, the feeling of which is almost impossible to explain in words. That is why the basis of this unique chart was made up of groups whose fame came in the 60-70s, that is, in"alive" bearers of this spirit.

1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps

The Fab Four's song is perfect for cutting the ribbon. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a great song in every sense, driving, catchy, melodic and at the same time quite heavy, unlike all the other Beatles material. The credit for this goes entirely to its author, George Harrison, the calmest and wisest member of the legendary group. This song became a benefit performance of his life-musical philosophy, and after his death - an eternal screensaver to his biography. Among the many covers of it, I would highlight the version by Jeff Healy, who turned “While My Guitar...” into a real metal ballad.

2. Soldier of Fortune

This ballad from 1974's "Stormbringer" was a little atypical for Purple, but no less good. It was a tumultuous time when the Hughes-Coverdales became the dominant force, replacing Roger Glover and Ian Gillan. The result was not bad at all, and this unusually tenacious slow fish is further proof of this. By the way, Blackmore himself spoke very positively about this composition, even claiming that it contains several medieval chords.

3.Love Hurts

The list also includes rock ballads that are filled with warmth and love. The featured song was introduced to the world in 1960 by the rock band the Everly Brothers. However, phenomenal success overtook her only 15 years later, when the band Nazareth presented a cover version of this composition. Even today, despite the appearance of many rock ballads, the song “Love Hurts” is still loved by many connoisseurs of different ages. It is rightfully considered one of the most romantic pieces of music.

4. The House Of The Rising Sun

The famous "House of the Rising Sun" is hardly an elegant or inventive song. Its strength is in its simplicity - a broken Western rhythm on simple guitar chords and Eric Burdon's grandiose vocals. This is a stunningly vivid example of raw and life-giving rock - one of the oldest, but also the most famous and enduring ballads of rock. If you want, his full-fledged calling card.

5. Catch the Rainbow

A delightful song that evokes the idea that Blackmore finally managed to “catch the rainbow.” There are very few words here, but everything seems clear, and the guitar of the “man in black” is more than eloquent. In general, a gem of early Rainbow and the Dio/Blackmore duo in particular. The creative union of the latter, it seems, was truly made in heaven. No offense intended to Candice Knight.

6. Wind of Change

I spent a long time deciding between “White Dove”, “Still Loving You” and “Wind of Change”. Still, you must agree that Klaus Meine is a master at creating gorgeous ballads. But the choice fell on the last composition, because it is dedicated to global changes at the turn of the 80s and 90s and directly to the Soviet “perestroika”. It just so happened that in the late 80s the group visited Moscow. Meine was so shocked by the changes in the lives of Soviet people and the activities of Gorbachev that he was inspired to create the song “Wind of Change.”

7. Stairway to Heaven

AC/DC fans will head straight down the highway to hell, while Led Zeppelin fans will climb the stairs straight to heaven. Zeppelin's music was not always clear and accessible to the listener, but it was always frank and professional to the point of intimacy. And in this creation, all the talents, skills and abilities of the musicians in the right proportion came together with the desire to convey them in the most intelligible form, without losing the signature sound, shrouded in mysticism. “Stairway to Heaven” speaks for itself. Starting with timid and quiet sounds, it gradually intensifies, as if you, climbing the stairs higher and higher, begin to hear the music flowing from the roof more and more clearly. You make it to the top, just in time for Page's greatest solo, considered the best guitar solo in history. To those who have not heard, it will not seem enough. By the way, if this article were top, “Stairway to Heaven” would definitely take first place.

8.Behind Blue Eyes

The Who have always been exceptional individualists and, therefore, most of their ballads do not fit into the category of “classics”. But this monumental creation from the masterpiece “Who’s Next” of 1971 cannot be called anything other than a true rock ballad. From the middle of the song they begin to go full blast, but before that you have time to fully enjoy Daltrey’s tender vocals and impeccably beautiful melody.

9. Nothing Else Matters

The first albums of the legendary American rock band were very heavy, but over time their repertoire became softer and deeper in meaning. This led them to write one of the most popular ballads in 1991, which earned public recognition. In addition, it became the reason for the emergence of a new round of popularity for the Metallica group, which significantly expanded the army of fans. James Hetfield, the band's vocalist, finds it difficult to remember the real reason for writing the song. But his famous guitar solo was invented during a telephone conversation by pure chance.

10. Wish You Were Here

A true legendary ballad from a legendary band. It was written in 1975 and was named one of the 500 best songs by the respected magazine Rolling Stone. The song, written by Roger Waters, talks about the contradictions that plague many people on Earth. It clearly expresses the struggle between idealism and egoism. This is described so deeply that there is still some debate about the meaning of the phrases expressed. The composition is constructed in a rather original way. First, the sound of a radio being tuned is heard, and only then a song plays. It seems that the performers, sitting in the car, are simply playing along with the melody coming from the radio. Interesting fact: a regular car radio was used to record the ballad.
